Tree of the week: Nīkau

Our native wood pigeon, the kererū, and the kaka, love to feed on the bright red fruit of the nīkau. Other native birds such as tui and silvereye will also feed on the nectar of the nīkau flowers. Nīkau make attractive specimen trees in small backyards, and are a great alternative to some of the more weedy exotic palms.

During July we will be giving away over 200 native trees suitable for urban backyards, including nīkau and kowhai, these will be available to be picked up from the Depot Artspace from 14 – 25 July, in conjunction with the Forest has the Blues project #foresthastheblues
